Ozone oxidative preconditioning (OOP) reduces contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) in rats. This protective effect is linked to enhanced antioxidant defenses and preserved nitric oxide levels, offering a potential therapeutic strategy for kidney protection.
Area of Science:
- Nephrology
- Experimental Medicine
- Biochemistry
Background:
- Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is a significant complication following vascular interventions.
- Ozone therapy can induce tolerance to ischemic injury via ozone oxidative preconditioning (OOP).
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the protective effects of ozone oxidative preconditioning (OOP) against experimental contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN).
Main Methods:
- Wistar rats were divided into control, contrast media (CM), ozone (O3), and oxygen (O2) groups.
- CIN was induced by intravenous contrast agent. Ozone or oxygen was administered intraperitoneally for 5 days prior.
- Renal function, oxidative stress markers (MDA, NO), and renal histology were assessed 48 hours post-contrast.
Main Results:
- Contrast administration significantly increased BUN, creatinine, MDA, and tubular necrosis, while decreasing NO levels.
- OOP treatment notably reduced BUN, creatinine, MDA, and tubular necrosis compared to the CM group.
- The O3 group exhibited higher serum and renal nitric oxide (NO) and total antioxidant system levels than the CM group.
Conclusions:
- Ozone oxidative preconditioning (OOP) effectively attenuates experimental contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN).
- The renoprotective mechanism of OOP involves strengthening renal antioxidant capacity and maintaining nitric oxide levels.
