Fixation stability measurements using the Spectral OCT/SLO (OCT/SLO) and Micro Perimeter 1 (MP-1) microperimeters are comparable. These devices provide interchangeable results for evaluating fixation stability in normal and maculopathy patients.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Vision Science
- Medical Devices
Background:
- Fixation stability is crucial for visual function and is often assessed using microperimetry.
- Comparing different microperimeter devices is essential for standardizing clinical measurements.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare fixation stability measurements between the Micro Perimeter 1 (MP-1) and the Spectral OCT/SLO (OCT/SLO) microperimeters.
- To evaluate the interchangeability of these devices in subjects with and without maculopathies.
Main Methods:
- A total of 41 healthy eyes and 45 eyes with maculopathies were included.
- A 20-second fixation test was performed on both eyes using both MP-1 and OCT/SLO.
- Fixation stability was quantified using the bivariate contour ellipse area (BCEA).
Main Results:
- No statistically significant differences in BCEA were found between the OCT/SLO and MP-1 in either normal or maculopathy groups.
- A moderate correlation (r = 0.45) was observed between the two devices.
- Despite differing sampling rates, BCEA measurements were not significantly affected.
Conclusions:
- Fixation stability assessments are comparable and interchangeable between the OCT/SLO and MP-1.
- The findings support the use of either microperimeter for reliable fixation stability evaluation.
