Summary

Autogenic relaxation training via self-help CD significantly reduced anxiety in stroke survivors. This intervention is feasible, acceptable, and cost-effective for community-dwelling individuals managing post-stroke anxiety.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of autogenic relaxation training for anxiety in stroke survivors.
  • To assess the effectiveness of a self-help CD-based relaxation intervention in reducing anxiety levels.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial with 21 community-dwelling stroke survivors experiencing anxiety.
  • Intervention group listened to an autogenic relaxation CD five times weekly for one month.
  • Anxiety was measured using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) monthly for three months.

Main Results:

  • Participants receiving relaxation training showed significantly reduced anxiety at all monthly assessments compared to the control group.
  • Seven out of ten participants in the intervention group completed the training and intended to continue its use.
  • The intervention was practical, inexpensive, and associated with minimal adverse effects.

Conclusions:

  • Autogenic relaxation training via self-help CD is a feasible and acceptable intervention for stroke survivors.
