Transforming a presentation to a publication: Tips for nurse practitioners

Abstract

Purpose:

Nurse practitioners (NPs) routinely make presentations at regional, national, and international conferences. However, compared to other health professionals, fewer of the presentations are followed by manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals. For more than 20 years, the Abstract to Publication rate has been a marker of conference quality and a trail of new knowledge development and dissemination. The purpose of this manuscript is to provide NPs with an approach for converting a presentation to a full manuscript.

Conclusions:

The overlap between a podium or poster presentation and a fully developed manuscript is quite significant; the difference is in the style of presentation.

Implications For Practice:

While scholarly writing may be somewhat daunting at first, resources are available to help any NP publish following a presentation. With sufficient planning, NPs can increase their Abstract to Publication rate.
