Thyroid dysfunction affects a significant portion of the population.
Previous recommendations for thyroid disease screening have been updated.
Subclinical and overt thyroid dysfunction can impact health outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

To update the 2004 U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommendation on thyroid disease screening.
To evaluate the evidence on the benefits and harms of screening for thyroid dysfunction in asymptomatic adults.
To assess the impact of treatment on health outcomes.

Main Methods:

Systematic review of evidence regarding screening for subclinical and overt thyroid dysfunction.
Evaluation of the effects of treatment on intermediate and final health outcomes.
Focus on nonpregnant, asymptomatic adult populations.

Main Results:

Evidence on the benefits of screening for thyroid dysfunction in asymptomatic adults is limited.
Evidence on the harms of screening for thyroid dysfunction in asymptomatic adults is insufficient.
