Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Aesthetic Medicine
  • Biomaterials Science

Background:

  • Debate exists regarding the aesthetic superiority of round versus anatomical form-stable breast implants.
  • Limited evidence compares cosmetic outcomes between these implant types.
  • A blinded study was designed to evaluate aesthetic results.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare aesthetic outcomes between round and anatomical form-stable breast implants in breast augmentation.
  • To assess surgeon perception of implant shape and its influence on aesthetic evaluation.

Main Methods:

  • A single surgeon performed breast augmentations on 60 patients (33 round, 27 anatomical).
  • Pre- and postoperative photographs were reviewed by 22 plastic surgeons.
  • Aesthetic outcomes were graded using a Likert scale for overall appearance, upper pole contour, and natural look.

Main Results:

  • Anatomical implants showed slightly higher scores for upper pole contour, natural appearance, and overall aesthetics, but differences were not statistically significant.
  • The majority of reviewers could not accurately identify the implant shape.
  • No significant difference in body mass index (BMI) was observed between groups.

Conclusions:

  • No statistically significant differences in aesthetic outcomes were found between round and anatomical breast implants.
  • Many reviewers were unable to correctly identify the implant shape, indicating subjective assessment.
  • The choice of implant should be individualized, considering various factors influencing aesthetic results.
