Egoism and Altruism01:55

Egoism and Altruism

94.6K
Voluntary behavior with the intent to help other people is called prosocial behavior. Why do people help other people? Is personal benefit such as feeling good about oneself the only reason people help one another?

Sympathetic Activation01:16

Sympathetic Activation

8.5K
The sympathetic division can influence tissues and organs by releasing norepinephrine at peripheral synapses and distributing epinephrine and norepinephrine through the bloodstream. In times of crisis or stress, sympathetic activation occurs, which is regulated by sympathetic centers in the hypothalamus. As a result, sympathetic activation prepares the body for physical exertion, rapid ATP production, and heightened alertness, allowing individuals to respond effectively to challenging or...

Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development01:19

Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development

1.6K
Kohlberg's theory of moral development uses the Heinz dilemma — a thought experiment in which a man, Heinz, must decide whether to steal an unaffordable drug to save his dying wife — to illustrate the evolution of moral reasoning. This framework, divided into three levels with two stages, highlights how individuals' understanding of right and wrong becomes increasingly complex.
Pre-Conventional Level
At the pre-conventional level, morality is primarily driven by personal...

Empathy02:34

Empathy

10.3K
Some researchers suggest that altruism operates on empathy. Empathy is the capacity to understand another person’s perspective, to feel what he or she feels. An empathetic person makes an emotional connection with others and feels compelled to help (Batson, 1991). Empathy can be expressed in several ways, including cognitive, affective, and motor.

Physiology of Emotion01:20

Physiology of Emotion

4.5K
The physiology of emotions is a multifaceted process involving the autonomic nervous system, brain structures, hormones, and neurotransmitters. This intricate interplay dictates how emotions manifest in the body and influence behavior.
Autonomic Nervous System
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a critical role in emotional responses by regulating involuntary physiological functions. It consists of two main components: the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. The sympathetic system...

Self-Discrepancy Theory02:45

Self-Discrepancy Theory

19.1K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Summary

Witnessing moral beauty triggers elevation, a positive emotion. This study found that elevation uniquely increases heart rate (HR) and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), indicating combined sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system activation.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Neuroscience
  • Physiology

Background:

  • Moral elevation is an emotional response to witnessing profound virtue.
  • Understanding the physiological underpinnings of this emotion is crucial for understanding socioemotional processing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the physiological correlates of moral elevation.
  • To characterize the autonomic and neural activity during elevation.

Main Methods:

  • Measurements included heart rate (HR), respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) activity.
  • Participants underwent physiological monitoring during the induction of moral elevation.

Main Results:

  • Heart rate (HR) and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) significantly increased during moral elevation.
  • Evidence suggests content-dependent alterations in medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) activity during elevation peaks.
  • Observed physiological changes indicate a unique pattern of sympathetic and parasympathetic activation.

Conclusions:

  • Moral elevation recruits a distinct autonomic and neural pattern.
  • This pattern involves a combination of sympathetic and parasympathetic activation, supporting arousal and social engagement.
  • Findings align with existing theories of socioemotional-induced allostasis.
