    Summary

    Plasma cortisol and urinary 17-keto steroid levels were lower in myopia patients compared to normal individuals. However, these differences were not statistically significant, suggesting limited correlation in this study.

    Background:

    • Myopia, a common refractive error, may have underlying endocrine associations.
    • Cortisol and 17-keto steroids are key hormones with potential roles in various physiological processes, including ocular health.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate plasma cortisol and 24-hour urinary 17-keto steroid levels in patients with simple and degenerative myopia.
    • To compare these hormonal levels with those of normal individuals.
    • To explore potential correlations between hormonal levels and family history in myopia.

    Main Methods:

    • Plasma cortisol was estimated using a fluorometric technique.
    • Urinary 17-keto steroids/24 hours were measured via the Zimmermann technique.
    • The study included 56 individuals: 38 with myopia (simple and degenerative) and 18 normal controls.
