Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the knowledge of nurses regarding noninvasive ventilation (NIV) between multipurpose ICUs and a surgical ICU.
  • To identify gaps in understanding and application of NIV protocols and complications.

Main Methods:

  • A multicenter, crosscutting, descriptive study was conducted in three university hospitals.
  • A validated survey instrument was administered to 117 nurses (65% response rate).
  • Data analysis included Chi-square tests to compare responses between different ICU types.

Main Results:

  • Nurses' knowledge of NIV interfaces varied, with only 23.1% correctly identifying appropriate masks for conventional ventilators.
  • Practices for mask adjustment and patient synchronization showed considerable variation.
  • Agitation was more frequently identified as an NIV complication in surgical ICUs compared to multipurpose ICUs (31.6% vs. 1.8%).
  • A majority of nurses (56.4%) did not consider respiratory physiotherapy a nursing care responsibility.

Conclusions:

  • NIV interface knowledge is significantly influenced by hospital resources and unit type.
  • Enhanced training is crucial for managing NIV complications like agitation and respiratory secretions.
