Background:

  • The phenomenon of tachyphylaxis, or acute tolerance, to pentagastrin-stimulated gastric acid secretion in humans remains debated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the existence and extent of tachyphylaxis to pentagastrin in patients with duodenal ulcers.
  • To assess the impact of repeated pentagastrin administration on gastric acid output.

  • Gastric acid output was measured in 19 duodenal ulcer patients.
  • Two sequential intramuscular injections of pentagastrin (6 µg/kg) were administered.
  • Maximal acid output following each injection was compared.
