Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the correlation between serum serotonin levels and bone turnover markers (serum alkaline phosphatase, serum osteocalcin, serum CrossLaps) and lumbar bone mineral density (BMD) in Caucasian postmenopausal women.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 191 Caucasian postmenopausal women without carcinoid syndrome or bone anomalies.
  • Measurements included serum serotonin (high-pressure liquid chromatography), bone formation markers (serum alkaline phosphatase, serum osteocalcin), bone resorption marker (serum CrossLaps), and central DXA for BMD.
  • Participants were grouped according to WHO criteria for osteoporosis and osteopenia.

Main Results:

  • Serum serotonin showed a statistically significant correlation with osteocalcin in the newly diagnosed osteoporosis group (N=40).
  • A statistically significant correlation was found between serum serotonin and alkaline phosphatase in the osteopenia group (N=88).
  • No statistically significant correlation was observed between serum serotonin and CrossLaps or lumbar bone mineral density.

Conclusions:

  • The findings suggest inconsistent associations between serum serotonin and bone metabolism markers, questioning its utility as a sole marker for skeletal status.
  • Limitations include the lack of analysis for antidepressant use.
  • This pilot study highlights the need for further investigation into the role of serum serotonin in skeletal evaluation.
