Biological Clocks and Seasonal Responses02:45

Biological Clocks and Seasonal Responses

42.1K
The circadian—or biological—clock is an intrinsic, timekeeping, molecular mechanism that allows plants to coordinate physiological activities over 24-hour cycles called circadian rhythms. Photoperiodism is a collective term for the biological responses of plants to variations in the relative lengths of dark and light periods. The period of light-exposure is called the photoperiod.

Muscle Stimulation Frequency01:22

Muscle Stimulation Frequency

5.2K
The contraction strength of muscles is regulated by motor neurons, which modulate the frequency of action potentials dispatched to the motor units based on the body's requirements. This process of varying the muscle stimulation frequency allows muscles to contract with a force that is precisely tailored to the needs of the moment, whether lifting a feather or a heavy box.
Wave summation
At low firing rates, motor neurons induce individual twitch contractions in muscle fibers. These twitches...

Summary

Human collective attention, measured on Twitter during US presidential debates, shows rapid, time-locked responses to candidate speech and interruptions. Public attention shifts quickly, demonstrating large-scale entrainment across multiple timescales.

Area of Science:

  • Complex Systems Science
  • Social Dynamics
  • Computational Social Science

Background:

  • Collective behaviors in complex systems are increasingly studied.
  • Entrainment, the synchronization of agents, is a key concept.
  • Human collective attention dynamics remain underexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To extend the concept of entrainment to human collective attention.
  • To investigate how collective attention unfolds during live events.
  • To quantify the impact of real-time events on social media attention.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of hundreds of thousands of Twitter messages during the 2012 US presidential debates.
  • Time-locking social media data with debate events.
  • Quantifying attention shifts at second-by-second, event-based, and overall debate timescales.

Main Results:

  • Collective social behavior on Twitter closely followed debate dynamics.
  • Candidate speaking caused immediate shifts in name mentions.
  • Interruptions amplified attention, and salient remarks triggered rapid social media responses peaking around one minute.

Conclusions:

  • Large-scale human entrainment in collective attention is demonstrated.
  • Entrainment occurs across multiple timescales in a time-locked manner.
  • The study provides methods for studying human entrainment dynamics.
