Area of Science:
- Adolescent Psychology
- Behavioral Science
- Educational Psychology
Background:
- Problem behaviors in adolescents are often linked to social skill deficits.
- This study investigated a prevention program's impact on male adolescent problem behaviors.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effectiveness of social skills training (SST) as a prevention program.
- To reduce problem behaviors and enhance social competence in male adolescents.
Main Methods:
- A randomized control trial with a pretest-posttest design was employed.
- 49 male adolescents received 10 weeks of social skills training (SST).
- Social Skills Rating System (SSRS-S) and Multiple Problem Behaviors Index (MPBI) were used for assessment.
Main Results:
- SST significantly improved social skills as measured by SSRS-S.
- The intervention group showed lower levels of MPBI at posttest and follow-up.
- MPBI scores differed significantly between groups at follow-up, indicating sustained effects.
Conclusions:
- Social skills training (SST) is effective in enhancing social competence.
- SST demonstrates efficacy in preventing problem behaviors among male adolescents.
- Further research should explore the influence of peer and family dynamics on intervention outcomes.
