[The course of protracted reactive depression in young children]
Insights
This study details the stages of protracted reactive depression in 34 children adapting to nursing homes, identifying key factors influencing their recovery and long-term outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
- Developmental Psychology
- Clinical Psychology
Context:
- Investigates protracted reactive depression in children experiencing maladaptation to institutional environments.
- Focuses on the specific challenges faced by children in nursing home settings.
Purpose:
- To delineate the distinct psychopathological and psychological stages of reactive depression in children.
- To identify background factors that determine the course and prognosis of this condition.
Summary:
- Utilized clinical-dynamic and catamnestic methods to study 34 children with reactive depression.
- Identified five stages: acute affective-shock, subacute depression, protracted polymorphic depressive-neurotic state, disease regression with compensation, and post-reactive state.
- Characterized each stage psychopathologically and psychologically, noting the influence of background factors on disease trajectory.
Impact:
- Provides a framework for understanding and diagnosing reactive depression in institutionalized children.
- Highlights the importance of identifying and addressing background factors for improved patient outcomes.
- Informs therapeutic interventions for children experiencing prolonged depressive and neurotic states due to environmental maladaptation.
Abstract:
Clinical-dynamic and catamnestic techniques were used to study 34 children with protracted reactive depression developed as a response to their maladaptation to the nursing house conditions. The following stages of the disease were singled out: I, acute affective-shock responses; II, subacute reactive depression; III, protracted polymorphic depressive-neurotic state; IV, regress of the disease, compensation; V, post-reactive++ state, the outcome of the psychogenic disorders. The psychopathological and psychological characterization of each stage was performed. Some of the "background" factors appeared as determinants of the course and outcome of the disease.
