Unlike carbon, water, and nitrogen, phosphorus is not present in the atmosphere as a gas. Instead, most phosphorus in the ecosystem exists as compounds, such as phosphate ions (PO43-), found in soil, water, sediment and rocks. Phosphorus is often a limiting nutrient (i.e., in short supply). Consequently, phosphorus is added to most agricultural fertilizers, which can cause environmental problems related to runoff in aquatic ecosystems.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To characterize the existing forms of phosphorus in seven different organic waste materials.
    • To compare the total phosphorus and various phosphorus fractions among these materials.
    • To assess the impact of composting on phosphorus mineralization and availability.

    Main Methods:

    • Phosphorus fractionation procedures developed by DOU et al. were employed.
    • Seven organic waste materials were analyzed: swine manure biogas residue (ZZ), cattle manure biogas residue (NZ), compost of cattle manure and corn straw (NJD), compost of sewage sludge (WD), and compost of rural daily garbage (NSLD).
    • Total phosphorus (TP) and various phosphorus fractions (H2O-P, NaOH-P, NaHCO3-P, HCl-P, Residues-P) were quantified.

    Main Results:

    • Significant differences in TP and P(t) were observed among the organic materials.
    • Swine manure biogas residue (ZZ) had the highest TP (23.59 g x kg(-1)), while cattle manure biogas residue (NZ) had the lowest (3.61 g x kg(-1)).
    • Inorganic phosphorus constituted 79.72% -94.76% of the total phosphorus, primarily in HCl-P fraction, indicating low plant availability. Composting increased inorganic phosphorus proportion.

    Conclusions:

    • The composition of phosphorus fractions varies greatly among different organic waste types.
    • A substantial portion of phosphorus in these organic materials exists as inorganic forms less available to plants.
    • Composting appears to enhance the mineralization of organic phosphorus, potentially improving its availability.
