Area of Science:

  • Materials Science and Engineering
  • Physics
  • Environmental Science

Background:

  • The Joint Engineering, Environmental and Processing (JEEP) beamline (I12) was developed as part of the Diamond Light Source Phase II.
  • It is situated on a 5m straight section of the Diamond storage ring.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide high-energy polychromatic and monochromatic X-rays (50-150 keV) for advanced material analysis.
  • To enable in-situ studies of materials and processes within environmental chambers without sample size limitations or beam attenuation.
  • To support a wide range of X-ray techniques for diverse scientific applications.

Main Methods:

  • Utilizes a 4.2 T superconducting wiggler source.
  • Provides a large beam size (1 mrad horizontally × 0.3 mrad vertically).
  • Offers X-ray radiography, tomography, energy-dispersive diffraction, monochromatic and white-beam 2D diffraction/scattering, and small-angle X-ray scattering.

Main Results:

  • The beamline's high energy and large beam size allow for deep penetration of dense samples.
  • Enables non-destructive analysis of materials and processes within environmental chambers.
  • Facilitates research across multiple scientific disciplines.

Conclusions:

  • I12 is a versatile X-ray facility supporting a broad user community.
  • Its advanced capabilities advance research in materials science, chemical processing, engineering, environmental science, and physics.
  • The beamline has been operational since November 2009, establishing a significant user base.
