Two novel polyoxometalate-based metal-organic frameworks (POM-MOFs), NENU-500 and NENU-501, show excellent stability and act as efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution. NENU-500 demonstrates superior performance as a 3D cathode.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Inorganic Chemistry
- Electrochemistry
Background:
- Polyoxometalate (POM)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging materials with tunable properties.
- Developing efficient and stable electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial for clean energy technologies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize and characterize novel POM-MOFs for electrocatalytic applications.
- To evaluate the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance of these new materials.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis of two novel POM-MOFs: NENU-500 and NENU-501.
- Structural characterization of the synthesized MOFs.
- Electrocatalytic testing for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic electrolytes.
Main Results:
- NENU-500 and NENU-501 exhibit good air stability and tolerance to acidic/basic media.
- NENU-500 demonstrated superior HER activity among MOF materials, with an onset overpotential of 180 mV and a Tafel slope of 96 mV·dec(-1).
- Both NENU-500 and NENU-501 maintained their electrocatalytic activity after 2000 cycles.
Conclusions:
- Novel POM-MOFs (NENU-500, NENU-501) were successfully synthesized and exhibit promising stability.
- NENU-500 is a highly efficient 3D electrocatalyst for HER, outperforming other MOF materials.
- These POM-MOFs hold potential for applications in hydrogen production technologies.
