Summary

Activated T helper 1 cells contribute to excessive fibrosis in Encapsulating Peritoneal Sclerosis (EPS). Increased soluble interleukin-2 receptor alpha (sCD25) levels in EPS patients signal this T-cell activation and peritoneal inflammation.

Background:

  • Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) is a severe fibrotic complication of long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD).
  • The exact mechanisms driving EPS development are not fully understood.
  • Peritoneal inflammatory T helper 1 cells are suspected to play a key role in EPS pathophysiology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of T-cell activation in Encapsulating Peritoneal Sclerosis (EPS).
  • To assess soluble interleukin-2 receptor alpha (sCD25) as a marker for T-cell activation in EPS patients.

Main Methods:

  • Measured serum and ascites sCD25 concentrations in EPS patients and various control groups.
  • Analyzed peritoneal biopsies for T-cell presence.
  • Characterized T cells from EPS ascites for differentiation and cytokine expression.

Main Results:

  • EPS patients showed significantly higher serum sCD25 levels compared to controls.
  • Elevated sCD25 levels in ascites indicated local production in EPS patients.
