Developing procedures for students who refuse to care for a client

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) epidemic raised the question of whether students should be required to provide nursing care for clients whose diagnosis for treatments may jeopardize students' health. Policies and procedures are necessary to provide a framework of functioning for faculty and students when students question their patient assignment. The author explains one institution's successful process for developing a procedure which can facilitate development of appropriate policies and procedures by other faculty.
