Spontaneous closure of intestinal loop stomas, including colostomy and ileostomy, is a rare surgical event. This case report details two male patients who experienced successful, uneventful spontaneous stoma healing without intervention.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Surgical Procedures
- Abdominal Surgery
Background:
- Intestinal loop stomas are common surgical interventions for abdominal conditions.
- Spontaneous closure of these stomas without surgical intervention is exceptionally rare.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report two unusual cases of spontaneous intestinal stoma closure.
- To highlight the rarity and potential mechanisms of spontaneous stoma healing.
Main Methods:
- Case report of two male patients presenting with acute abdominal pain.
- One patient underwent sigmoid loop colostomy for rectosigmoid perforation.
- The second patient had a loop ileostomy for complicated intestinal obstruction.
Main Results:
- Both the loop colostomy and loop ileostomy closed spontaneously.
- Colostomy closure occurred at 8 weeks, and ileostomy closure at 6 weeks.
- No adverse consequences were observed following spontaneous closure.
Conclusions:
- Spontaneous stoma closure is a rare but possible event.
- Potential factors may include gradual stoma retraction and the natural healing tendency of enterocutaneous fistulas.
