Summary

Cognitive rehabilitation in multiple sclerosis (MS) improved psychological well-being and quality of life. This multicomponent approach within multidisciplinary rehabilitation enhanced coping with cognitive challenges for MS patients.

Background:

  • Evidence for cognitive rehabilitation in multiple sclerosis (MS) remains limited.
  • Cognitive impairments are a significant challenge for individuals with MS.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of cognitive rehabilitation on cognitive and executive functioning in MS patients.
  • To assess the effects on psychological well-being and health-related quality of life (HRQoL).

Main Methods:

  • A 4-week multidisciplinary rehabilitation program with 120 MS patients.
  • Randomization into an intervention group (n=60) and a control group (n=60).
  • Intervention group received additional cognitive group/individual sessions and telephone follow-up focusing on Goal Attainment Scaling.

Main Results:

  • Both groups showed significant improvements in executive functioning at 4 and 7 months.
  • The intervention group experienced significant improvements in psychological well-being and psychological aspects of HRQoL.
  • No significant changes in psychological well-being or HRQoL were observed in the control group.

Conclusions:

  • Multicomponent cognitive rehabilitation, integrated into multidisciplinary care, enhances psychological well-being in MS patients.
  • This approach positively impacts the psychological aspects of health-related quality of life for individuals with MS.
