Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between baseline BMI and changes in BMI with dementia risk.
  • To examine if weight loss predicts cognitive function in a large prospective cohort.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a national cohort of adults (n=7029) with baseline assessments at average age 58 in 1994.
  • Analyzed associations between baseline BMI (1994) and memory scores (2000-2010).
  • Examined BMI changes (1994-1998) and their link to memory scores (2000-2010), and investigated if memory scores (1996) predicted BMI trajectories (2000-2010).

Main Results:

  • Baseline overweight status predicted better memory scores 6-16 years later.
  • A decline in BMI predicted lower memory scores over the following 12 years.
  • Lower memory scores at age 60 predicted a faster annual rate of BMI decline.

Conclusions:

  • Findings support reverse causation: greater BMI decline is linked to lower memory scores, and vice versa.
  • Preclinical dementia may predict weight loss in individuals as early as their late 50s.
