Depth Perception and Spatial Vision01:15

Depth Perception and Spatial Vision

2.7K
Depth perception is the ability to perceive objects three-dimensionally. It relies on two types of cues: binocular and monocular. Binocular cues depend on the combination of images from both eyes and how the eyes work together. Since the eyes are in slightly different positions, each eye captures a slightly different image. This disparity between images, known as binocular disparity, helps the brain interpret depth. When the brain compares these images, it determines the distance to an object.

Transformation of Plane Strain01:12

Transformation of Plane Strain

631
When analyzing elongated structures like bars subjected to uniformly distributed loads, it is essential to understand the transformation of plane strain when coordinate axes are rotated. This transformation helps to assess how material deformation characteristics vary with orientation, which is crucial in materials science and structural engineering.
Under plane strain conditions, typical for members where one dimension significantly exceeds the others, deformations and resultant strains are...

    Area of Science:

    • Computer Vision
    • Image Processing
    • Computer Graphics

    Background:

    • Stereo images and advanced display technologies necessitate effective stereo image retargeting.
    • Current warping-based methods preserve object shape but often introduce depth distortion due to indirect depth control.
    • Existing techniques struggle to maintain accurate 3D scene depth during image retargeting.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop a warping-based stereo image retargeting approach that simultaneously preserves salient object shape and 3D scene depth.
    • To investigate and model depth distortion in terms of warping functions.
    • To introduce region-based depth-preserving constraints for direct control of warping functions.

    Main Methods:

    • Characterized depth distortion based on warping functions to understand its impact.
    • Exploited binocular visual characteristics to derive region-based depth-preserving constraints.
    • Proposed a novel warping-based retargeting framework using these constraints, including a relaxation for shape-depth tradeoff.
    • Implemented the framework using a quad-based approach.

    Main Results:

    • The proposed method effectively preserves the depth of 3D scenes by directly controlling warping functions.
    • Simultaneous preservation of salient object shape and 3D scene depth was achieved.
    • Demonstrated the efficacy of the quad-based implementation in stereo image retargeting.
    • Successfully balanced shape and depth preservation through constraint relaxation.

    Conclusions:

    • The novel warping-based approach successfully addresses depth distortion in stereo image retargeting.
    • Direct control over warping functions enables faithful preservation of 3D scene depth.
    • The method offers a viable solution for retargeting stereo images while maintaining visual integrity.
    • Future work could explore further optimizations for real-time applications.
