Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the repeatability of a commercial interferometer for measuring tear lipid layer thickness (LLT).

Main Methods:

  • Two observers measured LLT in 20 Asian subjects using the LipiView ocular surface interferometer.
  • Tear break-up time (TBUT), dry eye symptoms, and corneal staining were also assessed.
  • Repeatability was quantified using the coefficient of repeatability and 95% limits of agreement.

Main Results:

  • The mean LLT was 53.53 ± 14.59 nm.
  • Intra-observer repeatability was 16 nm (95% limits: -11 to 18 nm).
  • Inter-observer repeatability was 13 nm (95% limits: -9 to 16 nm).
  • LLT showed no significant association with TBUT, corneal staining, or dry eye symptoms.

Conclusions:

  • The LipiView interferometer demonstrates acceptable repeatability for LLT measurements.
  • Knowledge of repeatability aids in interpreting clinical significance of LLT changes.
  • This study observed lower LLT in Asian subjects compared to previous reports.
