Background:

  • Simulation-based learning (SBL) is an increasingly adopted educational strategy in medical schools.
  • Evaluating student satisfaction is crucial for refining SBL implementation and effectiveness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess medical students' satisfaction with simulation-based learning (SBL) as a teaching strategy.
  • To identify specific aspects of SBL that contribute to or detract from student satisfaction.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey was administered to third and fourth-year medical students (n=185) at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences.
  • A validated questionnaire assessed satisfaction with SBL concerning knowledge, skills, environment, resources, and faculty.
  • Statistical analysis was performed on Likert-scale responses.

Main Results:

  • A 62% response rate (n=115) was achieved, with high overall student satisfaction reported for the teaching strategy, mannequin use, and learning environment.
  • Identified challenges included insufficient skill-laboratory facilities, limited student cooperation, inadequate time allocation, and instructor knowledge gaps.
  • Significant gender-based differences in satisfaction scores were observed (p=0.001), but no significant difference was found based on the year of education (p=0.62).

Conclusions:

  • Despite identified challenges, the majority of medical students expressed satisfaction with SBL.
  • SBL was perceived by students as an effective method for enhancing knowledge retention, practical skills, and communication abilities.
  • Addressing facility and logistical challenges could further optimize the SBL experience for medical students.
