Difference from Background: Limit of Detection

10.0K
The limit of detection (LOD) is the smallest amount of analyte that can be distinguished from the background noise. The LOD value corresponds to the concentration at which the analyte signal is three times larger than the standard deviation of the blank signal. Below this value, the analyte signal cannot be differentiated from the background noise. It is calculated by dividing the calibration slope by 3 times the standard deviation of the blank signals.
The LOD indicates the presence or absence...

In-situ Hybridization02:31

In-situ Hybridization

11.1K
In situ hybridization (ISH) is a technique used to detect and localize specific DNA or RNA molecules in cells, tissue, or tissue sections using a labeled probe. The technique was first used in 1969 for the investigation of nucleic acids. It is currently an essential tool in scientific research and clinical settings, especially for diagnostic purposes.
Types of probes and labels
A probe is a complementary strand of DNA or RNA that binds to corresponding nucleotide sequences in a cell. Many...

Anatomical Terminology01:20

Anatomical Terminology

31.8K
Knowledge of anatomy is essential to understand human biology and medicine. Anatomists and health care professionals use standard terminology to describe the human body with more precision and no ambiguity. Anatomical terms have mostly Greek and Latin-derived roots. Because these languages are rarely used in conversation, the meaning of words remains the same. Each term is made up of a root in between the prefixes and suffixes. The root of a term often refers to an organ, tissue, or condition,...

Nuclear Localization Signals and Import01:46

Nuclear Localization Signals and Import

8.4K
Proteins targeted to the nucleus carry short stretches of amino acid sequences called the nuclear localization signal or NLS. Classical nuclear localization signals are of two types: monopartite and bipartite NLS. Monopartite classical NLS (cNLS) consists of a single cluster of 4-8 amino acids. Bipartite cNLS consists of two clusters of  2-3 amino acids and a 9-12 residue long proline-rich linker bridging the two clusters. Signal clusters are rich in positively charged amino acids such as...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Informatics
  • Clinical Laboratory Science
  • Health Data Standards

Background:

  • Clinical laboratories generate vast amounts of data that require standardized coding for effective exchange.
  • Lack of standardized coding hinders semantic interoperability in healthcare data exchange.
  • Russian laboratory terminology presents a unique challenge for international standardization.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of semiautomatically mapping Russian laboratory terms to the LOINC standard.
  • To assess the resource requirements and cost-efficiency of implementing LOINC for laboratory data.
  • To establish LOINC as a canonical coding system for Russian laboratory data exchange.

Main Methods:

  • Semiautomatic mapping of Russian laboratory terms to LOINC codes.
  • Involvement of two distinct clinical settings (Clinic A and Clinic B) and a central laboratory service.
  • Analysis of mapping success rates, required effort, and associated costs.

Main Results:

  • Achieved a high mapping success rate: 86% for Clinic A and 87% for Clinic B.
  • The effort required for mapping and ongoing maintenance was deemed reasonable and cost-effective.
  • Successful establishment of LOINC as the standard coding method for laboratory data exchange.

Conclusions:

  • Semiautomatic mapping of Russian laboratory terms to LOINC is a feasible and efficient approach.
  • LOINC implementation facilitates semantic interoperability, improving laboratory data exchange.
  • The cost of mapping and maintenance is relatively low, making LOINC a practical solution.
