Women veterans found a Web-based diabetes prevention program (DPP) appealing due to convenience and accountability. This online DPP shows promise for helping women veterans manage prediabetes and initiate lifestyle changes.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Digital Health Interventions
- Chronic Disease Management
Background:
- Diabetes prevention is a national priority, with high prevalence (25%) in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA).
- Web-based diabetes prevention programs (DPPs) offer a feasible and effective alternative to in-person interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To qualitatively explore women veterans' initial experiences with a Web-based DPP.
- To quantitatively assess weight loss, participation, and engagement within this population.
Main Methods:
- Semistructured interviews were conducted with 15 women veterans with prediabetes.
- Data on weight change, program participation, and engagement metrics were collected over 16 weeks.
Main Results:
- Participants viewed the Web-based DPP as an appealing method for lifestyle change, valuing accountability and convenience.
- Average weight loss was 5.24%; 82% completed at least 9 modules.
- High engagement observed: mean 76 logins, 46 group messages, 20.5 private messages.
Conclusions:
- Women veterans reported generally positive experiences with the Web-based DPP.
- Accountability and convenience were identified as key factors driving participation and engagement.
- Web-based DPPs represent a promising approach for delivering diabetes prevention to women veterans.
