Background:

  • Subtalar joint arthrodesis corrects hindfoot deformities and alleviates osteoarthritis pain.
  • Accurate preoperative and intraoperative radiographic parameters are crucial for successful realignment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify objective radiographic parameters for improving subtalar joint arthrodesis accuracy and long-term success.
  • To evaluate the correlation between radiographic alignment and surgical outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 16 patients (19 fusions) undergoing subtalar joint arthrodesis.
  • Analysis of preoperative and intraoperative radiographic measurements including talo-first metatarsal and tibial-calcaneal angles and distances.

Main Results:

  • Statistically significant improvements were observed in anteroposterior talo-first metatarsal angle (p = .002), lateral talo-first metatarsal angle (p < .001), tibial-calcaneal angle (p < .001), and tibial-calcaneal distance (p < .001).
  • A strong positive correlation (r = 0.825, p < .001) was found between tibial-calcaneal angle and distance.

Conclusions:

  • Proper realignment of the calcaneus to a vertical and central position under the tibia is essential for successful subtalar joint arthrodesis.
  • Objective radiographic parameters can enhance surgical accuracy and predict short- and long-term outcomes.
