Background:

Twitter is increasingly used for professional networking and learning.
Understanding educators' perceptions of social media for professional development is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore US school teachers' perceptions of using Twitter for professional development.
To examine engagement in online communities of practice via Twitter.
To identify perceived benefits and drawbacks of Twitter participation for educators.

Main Methods:

Qualitative embedded case study design.
Analysis of #EdChat Twitter data (3 months).
Interviews with 19 US teachers participating in #EdChat.
Thematic coding using NVIVO software.
Informed by Communities of Practice and Connectivist Conceptual Framework.

Main Results:

Five major themes emerged, including knowledge sharing, sense of belonging, and meaningful professional development.
Teachers perceived Twitter as a platform for reflection and experience exchange.
Identified technical benefits and drawbacks of using Twitter were documented.

Conclusions:

Educators perceived Twitter as a valuable online forum for professional reflection and peer support.
Despite challenges with information volume, teachers developed coping skills and found discussions learner-centered.
The sense of community and learning on Twitter was highly valued, often exceeding workplace opportunities.
