Analysis of 180 Miscanthus accessions using a Diversity Arrays Technology (DArT) platform revealed high genetic diversity. Commercially available Miscanthus × giganteus actually comprises two distinct genetic groups, challenging previous assumptions of limited diversity.
Area of Science:
- Plant genetics
- Bioenergy crops
- Genomics
Background:
- Miscanthus is a key perennial grass feedstock for bioenergy and biofuel production.
- Miscanthus × giganteus, a hybrid of M. sinensis and M. sacchariflorus, is widely used but reported to have limited genetic diversity.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a Diversity Arrays Technology (DArT) platform for Miscanthus.
- To analyze the genetic structure and diversity within a collection of 180 Miscanthus accessions.
- To investigate the genetic makeup of commercially available Miscanthus × giganteus.
Main Methods:
- Development and application of a DArT platform for Miscanthus.
- Genotyping of 180 Miscanthus accessions using 906 markers.
- Phylogenetic and genetic structure analyses.
Main Results:
- A total of 906 markers were generated, with 25.5% showing high polymorphism information content.
- Analysis revealed high genetic differentiation and diversity across the 180 accessions.
- Commercially available Miscanthus × giganteus accessions were found to belong to two genetically distinct groups, suggesting the presence of mutants/variants and recent hybrids.
Conclusions:
- The developed DArT marker system is a valuable resource for Miscanthus crop improvement, germplasm preservation, and genetic studies.
- Commercial Miscanthus × giganteus exhibits higher genetic diversity than previously assumed.
- This finding has significant implications for breeding new Miscanthus cultivars for enhanced bioenergy production.

Trihybrid Crosses
Some of Mendel’s crosses examined three pairs of contrasting characteristics. Such a cross is called a trihybrid cross. A trihybrid cross is a combination of three individual monohybrid crosses. For example, plant height (tall vs. short), seed shape (round vs. wrinkled), and seed color (yellow vs. green).
The F1 generation plants of a trihybrid cross are heterozygous for all three traits and produce eight gametes. Upon self-fertilization, these gametes have an equal...
