Hepatitis is an inflammatory condition of the liver most commonly caused by hepatotropic viruses (A–E), though non-infectious causes such as alcohol and drugs also exist.Hepatitis AHepatitis A virus (HAV) is a non-enveloped RNA virus of the Picornaviridae family. Summary

This study found no association between Hepatitis G virus (HGV) infection and unknown chronic hepatitis in military staff. Therefore, routine HGV screening is not recommended for these patients.

Background:

  • Hepatitis G virus (HGV) is a hepatotropic virus with unclear clinical significance.
  • HGV has been detected in patients with various liver conditions, including chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma.
  • The role of HGV in cryptogenic chronic hepatitis remains to be elucidated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between Hepatitis G virus infection and cases of unknown chronic hepatitis.
  • To determine if HGV plays a role in the etiology of chronic hepatitis of unknown cause.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted with 35 military staff diagnosed with unknown chronic hepatitis (cases) and 59 healthy individuals with normal ALT levels (controls).
  • HGV antibody testing was performed on all participants.
  • Data were analyzed using Fisher's exact test, Student's t-test, and multivariate logistic regression.

Main Results:

  • HGV antibodies were detected in only one case (2.9%) and none of the controls.
  • No statistically significant association was found between HGV infection and unknown chronic hepatitis (P=0.37).
  • A significant association was observed between male gender and unknown chronic hepatitis (OR=14.9, P=0.01).

Conclusions:

  • The study did not find evidence to support an association between HGV infection and unknown chronic hepatitis.
  • Routine testing for HGV in patients with unexplained chronic hepatitis is not warranted based on these findings.
  • Male gender emerged as a significant risk factor for unknown chronic hepatitis in this cohort.
