Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the correlation between reading abilities, verbal ability, and creativity in a university student sample.
  • To determine if specific reading disabilities are associated with enhanced creative performance.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 259 Chilean university students (ages 17-38) were assessed on verbal ability, reading comprehension, phonological awareness, creativity, and insight.
  • Simple linear regression analyses were conducted on the complete sample and stratified high/low reading achievement groups.

Main Results:

  • Significant positive correlations were found between verbal ability and creativity/insight tasks (r = .152 to .356, p < .001).
  • Reading comprehension and phonological awareness scores were significant predictors of creativity and insight (β = .315 to .155, p < .05).
  • No evidence supported the hypothesis that reading disabilities enhance creativity; higher verbal ability correlated with higher creativity.

Conclusions:

  • Higher verbal ability, encompassing reading comprehension and phonological awareness, is associated with enhanced creativity and insight.
  • The findings do not support the notion that specific reading disabilities are linked to superior creative abilities.
