Summary

Septoplasty is effective for all ages, but patient satisfaction decreases with aging. This study examined the impact of aging on septoplasty outcomes, finding similar functional improvements across age groups but lower satisfaction in older patients.

Background:

Aging is a prognostic factor for surgical success, yet its impact on septoplasty outcomes remains understudied.
Septoplasty aims to correct nasal septal deviation, improving airflow and quality of life.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the effect of aging on the success of septoplasty.
To compare functional outcomes and patient satisfaction in older versus younger adults undergoing septoplasty.

Main Methods:

A prospective case-control study comparing 23 patients over 60 with 26 patients under 40 undergoing septoplasty.
Evaluated outcomes using the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) score, nasal mucociliary clearance time (MCCt), and Glasgow Benefit Inventory (GBI) index.

Main Results:

Both age groups showed significant improvement in NOSE scores and MCCt post-surgery.
Older patients reported significantly lower Glasgow Benefit Inventory (GBI) scores, indicating reduced satisfaction.
A significant inverse relationship was found between decreased NOSE scores and higher GBI indexes.

Conclusions:

Septoplasty is a successful procedure for improving nasal function across all adult age groups.
While functional outcomes are comparable, patient satisfaction with septoplasty may decrease with advancing age.
