Summary

Chelation therapy, using pharmaceutical agents to remove heavy metals, is not supported by evidence for improving autism spectrum disorder (ASD) symptoms. Risks associated with chelation therapy outweigh any proven benefits for ASD.

Background:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) severity may correlate with toxic metal levels.
Chelation therapy aims to improve ASD symptoms by excreting heavy metals.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the benefits and adverse effects of pharmaceutical chelating agents for ASD symptoms.

Main Methods:

Searched multiple databases up to November 2014 for randomized controlled trials.
Included one study comparing pharmaceutical chelating agents (DMSA) with placebo in children with ASD.

Main Results:

One study with methodological limitations was included.
No evidence suggests oral dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) effectively impacts ASD symptoms.
The study involved children with ASD who were high excreters of heavy metals.

Conclusions:

No clinical trial evidence supports pharmaceutical chelation as an effective ASD intervention.
Risks of chelation therapy (e.g., hypocalcaemia, renal impairment) outweigh benefits.
Further research requires evidence of a causal link between heavy metals and autism and participant safety protocols.
