Case management services did not significantly reduce repeated self-harm or completed suicides in a high-risk Taiwanese city. However, overall suicide rates declined after the Suicide Prevention Center of Keelung City was established.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Psychiatry
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Case management is a component of suicide prevention strategies.
- High suicide rates necessitate effective interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effectiveness of case management in reducing repeated suicide attempts and completed suicides.
- To assess the impact of case management in a Taiwanese city with elevated suicide rates.
Main Methods:
- A cohort of 2,496 individuals with nonfatal self-harm was analyzed.
- Data was collected from the Suicide Prevention Center of Keelung City (KSPC) between 2006 and 2011.
- Individuals were tracked for repeated self-harm and suicide outcomes.
Main Results:
- 40.6% of subjects received case management.
- No significant difference in repeated self-harm or completed suicide risk was observed between case management recipients and non-recipients.
- A significant reduction in overall suicide rates was noted following the establishment of KSPC.
Conclusions:
- Case management may not be effective in reducing long-term suicide repetition among survivors.
- Further research is needed to identify factors contributing to the observed decrease in suicide rates.
