Summary

TachoSil® effectively controlled bleeding and sealed dural defects in 100 neurosurgery patients, showing excellent safety and wound healing outcomes. This study confirms TachoSil® as a reliable hemostat and sealant in cranial and spinal procedures.

Background:

  • TachoSil® is a collagen-based sponge with human fibrinogen and thrombin.
  • Its use as a hemostat and sealant in microneurosurgery was evaluated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the efficacy and safety of TachoSil® in microneurosurgical procedures.
  • To assess its performance as both a hemostat and a sealant for dural defects.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective analysis of 100 consecutive neurosurgical cases using TachoSil®.
  • Patient demographics, surgical indications (tumor removal, aneurysm clipping, etc.), and follow-up data were collected.
  • Postoperative care included CT scans and wound assessments during hospitalization and follow-up (mean 4 months).

Main Results:

  • No postoperative hematomas or cerebrospinal fluid leaks were observed.
  • 93% of patients had no wound-related issues during initial assessment.
  • 96% experienced uneventful wound healing; 4% had superficial infections treated with antibiotics. No allergic reactions occurred.

Conclusions:

  • TachoSil® demonstrates efficacy as a hemostat, sealant, and adhesive in cranial and spinal neurosurgery.
  • Its use in neurosurgical practice is associated with no additional risks.
  • The study supports TachoSil® as a safe and effective adjunct in neurosurgical procedures.
