We introduce CoMP, a new mobility management protocol for the Internet of Things (IoT). CoMP uses the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) to efficiently retrieve data from moving sensor nodes, outperforming Mobile IP.
Area of Science:
- Computer Science
- Networking
- Internet of Things (IoT)
Background:
- Existing mobility management protocols like Mobile IP are unsuitable for IoT due to sensor node constraints (limited power, sleep/wakeup modes).
- Mobile sensor nodes acting as servers (e.g., using CoAP) complicate data retrieval for web clients.
- Constrained wireless networks in IoT environments pose challenges for traditional mobility management.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose a novel mobility management protocol, CoMP, for efficient data retrieval from moving sensor nodes in IoT environments.
- To leverage the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) for mobility management, reducing signaling overhead and packet loss.
- To enhance reliability and data integrity for web-based applications interacting with mobile IoT devices.
Main Methods:
- Developed CoMP, a mobility management protocol utilizing the IETF CoAP protocol.
- Implemented a separate location management server to track mobile sensor nodes.
- Introduced a 'holding mode' to prevent data loss during node movement.
- Extended CoAP signaling procedures for discovery, registration, binding, and holding.
Main Results:
- CoMP effectively retrieves sensing data from moving sensor nodes.
- The protocol eliminates the additional signaling overhead associated with Mobile IP.
- CoMP demonstrates reliable mobility management and prevents packet loss.
- Performance evaluation shows CoMP has superior handover latency and packet loss compared to Mobile IPv4/v6 and Hierarchical Mobile IPv4/v6.
Conclusions:
- CoMP offers a robust and efficient solution for mobility management in IoT environments.
- The protocol's reliance on CoAP makes it well-suited for constrained IoT devices.
- CoMP significantly improves data retrieval reliability and reduces latency for web-based IoT applications.
