Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Background:

The Yale Craving Scale (YCS) is a novel measure for assessing cigarette and alcohol craving.
It uniquely employs a generalized Labeled Magnitude Scale (gLMS) for scoring.
This gLMS format allows for better between-group comparisons and avoids ceiling effects.

Purpose of the Study:

To psychometrically evaluate the Yale Craving Scale (YCS) for both smoking and drinking.
To assess its latent factor structure, internal consistency, and test-criterion relationships.
To validate the YCS as a measure of craving in dependent populations.

Main Methods:

Psychometric evaluations were conducted on the YCS for cigarettes (YCS Smoking) and alcohol (YCS Drinking).
Methods included assessments of factor structure, internal consistency, ceiling effects, and criterion relationships.
Study samples comprised 493 treatment-seeking smokers and 213 heavy drinkers.

Main Results:

Factor analyses confirmed a 1-factor structure for both YCS Smoking and YCS Drinking.
The YCS demonstrated good internal consistency and scalar measurement invariance across subgroups.
Convergent and concurrent relationships were found with existing craving measures and smoking/drinking outcomes.
