Neurogenesis and Regeneration of Nervous Tissue01:15

Neurogenesis and Regeneration of Nervous Tissue

2.1K
In the CNS, neurogenesis, the birth of new neurons from stem cells, is limited to the hippocampus in adults. In other regions of the brain and spinal cord, neurogenesis is almost non-existent due to inhibitory influences from neuroglia, especially oligodendrocytes, and the absence of growth-stimulating cues. The myelin produced by oligodendrocytes in the CNS inhibits neuronal regeneration. Furthermore, astrocytes proliferate rapidly after neuronal damage, forming scar tissue that physically...

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Developmental Biology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Recent advances in human neocortex evolution and brain-wide proteome/transcriptome analyses offer new insights.
  • Understanding molecular mechanisms is crucial for neural maturation and neurological disorder pathophysiology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide an overview of the cellular, molecular, and genetic underpinnings of brain development.
  • To emphasize key mechanisms in normal neural development from embryonic to early postnatal stages.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on brain development.
  • Emphasis on cellular, molecular, and genetic mechanisms.
  • Focus on key developmental landmarks and processes.

Main Results:

  • Detailed overview of neural stem/progenitor cell proliferation.
  • Explanation of cortical neuronal migration and cerebral cortex evolution/folding.
  • Discussion of synaptogenesis, neural circuit development, gliogenesis, and myelination.

Conclusions:

  • Perturbations in these developmental mechanisms can lead to disorders.
  • Common perinatal brain injuries can also disturb normal brain development.
  • This overview serves as a foundation for further research into brain development and disorders.
