Background:

  • Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a prevalent rheumatologic condition causing widespread pain and fatigue.
  • General practitioners (GPs) play a key role in primary care but often lack sufficient knowledge about FMS.
  • This study addresses the knowledge gap among Iranian GPs regarding FMS.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the current knowledge of Iranian general practitioners about fibromyalgia syndrome.
  • To evaluate their understanding of FMS signs, symptoms, diagnostic criteria, and treatment options.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire was administered to 190 general practitioners in Iran.
  • The survey covered FMS symptoms, diagnostic criteria, and treatment modalities.
  • Data were analyzed using SPSS, reporting awareness as percentages.

Main Results:

  • Only 30% of GPs had encountered FMS cases; few knew the correct number of tender points (3.2% knew 16-18).
  • Commonly recognized symptoms included widespread pain and fatigue, but incorrect symptoms like elevated inflammatory markers were also identified.
  • Knowledge of appropriate FMS treatments was limited, with significant numbers incorrectly suggesting NSAIDs and corticosteroids.

Conclusions:

  • Iranian general practitioners exhibit inadequate knowledge of fibromyalgia syndrome.
  • There is a clear need to integrate FMS education into undergraduate medical curricula and continuing medical education programs.
