Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model01:29

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model

399
The Self-Evaluation Maintenance (SEM) model offers a psychological framework to understand how individuals’ self-esteem is influenced by the achievements of others, particularly those with whom they share close personal bonds. The SEM model operates when personal rather than social identity guides individuals. Central to this model is the notion that individuals have an inherent desire to preserve a favorable self-image, which is continuously shaped by interpersonal comparisons and...

Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

1.2K
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

14.4K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Strategies of Self-Presentation III: Self-Monitoring

399
Self-monitoring is a central construct in understanding individual differences in self-presentation strategies across social contexts. It refers to how individuals observe, regulate, and control their expressive behavior and self-presentation following situational cues. Self-monitoring reflects a person's sensitivity to social appropriateness and willingness to adapt behavior to fit varying interpersonal demands.High vs. Low Self-Monitoring IndividualsIndividuals high in self-monitoring are...

Self-Discrepancy Theory02:45

Self-Discrepancy Theory

19.1K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

5.9K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Area of Science:

  • Adolescent and Young Adult Health
  • Health Services Research
  • Chronic Disease Management

Background:

  • Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with chronic conditions require specific self-management and health care transition (HCT) skills.
  • Existing assessment tools may not adequately capture these skills in a broad population of AYAs.
  • The Self-Management and Transition to Adulthood with Rx=Treatment (STARx) Questionnaire was developed to address this gap.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate the STARx Questionnaire for assessing self-management and HCT skills in AYAs with chronic conditions.
  • To establish the reliability, internal consistency, and factor structure of the STARx Questionnaire.
  • To provide a self-report measure suitable for diverse chronic conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Iterative development involving AYAs, families, and health providers.
  • Pilot testing and validation with 1219 AYAs across multiple settings and conditions.
  • Exploratory factor analysis and reliability testing (internal consistency, temporal stability).

Main Results:

  • The final 18-item STARx Questionnaire demonstrated a robust six-factor structure explaining 65% of the variance.
  • Key factors include Medication management, Provider communication, Engagement during appointments, Disease knowledge, Adult health responsibilities, and Resource utilization.
  • The scale showed good internal consistency (alpha=.80) and temporal stability, and was sensitive to developmental differences.

Conclusions:

  • The STARx Questionnaire is a reliable and valid self-report instrument for measuring self-management and transition skills in AYAs with chronic conditions.
  • Its multidimensional factor structure and psychometric properties support its use in clinical and research settings.
  • STARx offers a valuable assessment strategy to support AYAs in their transition to adult health care.
