Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Surgical Technology

Background:

  • Ultrasound and fluoroscopy are standard for urologic punctures.
  • Cross-sectional and 3D imaging offer potential for enhanced procedural safety, particularly in complex scenarios.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility of 3D planned laser-guided urologic punctures using the Uro Dyna-CT system.
  • To assess the accuracy and applicability of this novel technique in a clinical setting.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-seven punctures were performed using the syngo iGuide laser-guided system with the Uro Dyna-CT.
  • Patients with complex indications, including unclear ultrasound findings or suspected bowel involvement, were included.
  • Puncture tracts were planned using 3D and cross-sectional reconstructions, with guidance from the laser system.

Main Results:

  • 24 out of 27 (89%) punctures were successful.
  • No severe complications were reported.
  • Median radiation dose was 6113.1 μGym², comparable to other advanced imaging techniques.

Conclusions:

  • The Uro Dyna-CT-based 3D laser-guided puncture technique is a viable tool for complex urologic procedures.
  • While radiation doses are higher than standard fluoroscopy, they are comparable to CT-guided punctures.
  • This method enhances the urologist's ability to manage challenging puncture cases.
