Embryonic matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) secretion increases with embryo development and correlates with implantation success. High MMP-9 levels in embryos indicate better quality and higher clinical pregnancy rates in IVF-ET patients.
Area of Science:
- Reproductive biology
- Biochemistry
Background:
- Embryo quality is crucial for successful in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET).
- Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) is an enzyme implicated in tissue remodeling and embryonic development.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the correlation between embryonic matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) secretion, embryonic development, and clinical pregnancy rates.
- To evaluate MMP-9 as a potential biomarker for embryo quality assessment in IVF-ET.
Main Methods:
- Collected embryo cultures from IVF-ET patients.
- Assessed embryo grade and quantified MMP-9 secretion using Dot-blot and ELISA.
- Tracked clinical pregnancy outcomes one month post-embryo transfer.
Main Results:
- Embryonic MMP-9 secretion progressively increased from the 2-cell to 8-cell stage (p < 0.05).
- Higher MMP-9 secretion in 8-cell embryos correlated significantly with better embryo scores (p < 0.001).
- Clinical pregnancy rates were substantially higher for embryos with high MMP-9 secretion (77.3%) compared to low secretion (16.7%) (p < 0.001).
Conclusions:
- Embryonic MMP-9 secretion is closely linked to embryo quality and implantation potential.
- MMP-9 shows promise as a criterion for evaluating embryo quality in assisted reproductive technologies.
