    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Internal Medicine
    • Diagnostic Medicine

    Background:

    • Non-specific abdominal pain is a common presenting complaint in emergency departments.
    • Initial diagnostic workups frequently fail to identify a definitive cause.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the diagnostic yield of initial investigations for non-specific abdominal pain.
    • To determine the effectiveness of symptomatic treatment and the necessity of follow-up investigations.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 48 patients admitted with non-specific abdominal pain over one year.
    • Review of routine investigations including blood, urine, stool, and X-ray examinations.
    • Assessment of treatment response to analgesics and antispasmodics and subsequent outpatient follow-up.

    Main Results:

    • All initial routine investigations were negative for a specific diagnosis.
    • Abdominal pain resolved within 48 hours in all patients with symptomatic treatment.
    • Subsequent outpatient investigations revealed diverse underlying causes for the initial pain.

    Conclusions:

    • Standard initial investigations are insufficient for diagnosing non-specific abdominal pain.
    • Symptomatic treatment provides temporary relief but does not address the root cause.
    • Outpatient follow-up and further investigations are essential for accurate diagnosis and management of non-specific abdominal pain.
