Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

5.9K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

591
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Treatment approaches for psychological disorders fall into three main categories: psychological, biological, and sociocultural. Each approach targets different aspects of mental health, requiring varying levels of education and training.
Psychological therapies focus on modifying emotions, thoughts, and behaviors through talking, interpreting, listening, rewarding, challenging, and modeling. Clinical psychologists, counselors, and social workers commonly practice psychotherapy. Clinical...

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

1.3K
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.

Cognitive Development During Adolescence01:18

Cognitive Development During Adolescence

879
During adolescence, individuals experience significant cognitive development that enhances their understanding of others' emotions and thoughts, known as cognitive empathy. This period is marked by an increased ability to adapt to others' perspectives and a more nuanced understanding of others' mental states, a skill that is foundational for social problem-solving and conflict avoidance. The development of cognitive empathy relies heavily on the theory of mind — the...

Area of Science:

  • Mental Health
  • Psychology
  • Educational Interventions

Background:

  • Adolescent mental health is marked by high psychiatric disorder rates and low help-seeking.
  • Existing interventions yield inconsistent results, often using cognitive behavioral therapy unsuitable for early intervention.
  • Positive psychology offers an alternative by focusing on well-being enhancement.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility of a structured, 6-week online positive psychology program in schools.
  • To evaluate the program's impact on adolescent well-being and mental health symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • Four high schools participated, with students randomly assigned to a positive psychology intervention ('Bite Back') or a control group.
  • Interventions were delivered online over 4-6 weeks during class time, using workbooks and interactive exercises.
  • Symptom measures, well-being, flourishing, and life satisfaction were assessed at baseline and post-intervention.

Main Results:

  • Both groups showed reductions in depression, stress, and total symptoms without significant differences.
  • Life satisfaction improved significantly in both the positive psychology and control groups.
  • Only the control group demonstrated significant increases in flourishing scores.

Conclusions:

  • A structured online positive psychology program within the school curriculum was not more effective than a control condition.
  • Limitations in online program delivery within school settings may have influenced the findings.
  • Further research is needed to optimize digital mental health interventions for adolescents.
