Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Dermatology
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Cutaneous tuberculosis is uncommon, particularly in Western regions.
  • Diagnosis and classification of skin tuberculosis present significant challenges.
  • Leprosy can sometimes be associated with cutaneous tuberculosis.

Observation:

  • A young Senegalese man presented with disseminated cutaneous tuberculosis.
  • Mycobacterium Microti was identified in cutaneous ulcers.
  • This organism was previously considered non-pathogenic to humans.

Findings:

  • The case involved disseminated disease alongside skin ulcers.
  • Mycobacterium Microti was the sole organism isolated from various samples.
  • The patient received successful treatment with antitubercular chemotherapy.

Implications:

  • This report suggests Mycobacterium Microti may be pathogenic to humans under certain circumstances.
  • Further research and case reports are needed to confirm human pathogenicity.
  • This case underscores the importance of considering unusual pathogens in diagnosing cutaneous infections.
