Summary

Heterophoria measurement is not a reliable routine diagnostic tool for near vision symptoms. Associated heterophoria may indicate symptoms, particularly in younger patients with higher prism dioptre values.

Background:

  • Near vision symptoms can be challenging to diagnose in routine investigations.
  • Heterophoria, an eye alignment issue, is often considered in relation to visual discomfort.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if heterophoria measurements can predict near vision symptoms.
  • To identify cut-off values for dissociated and associated heterophoria that discriminate between symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.

Main Methods:

  • Patients were divided into age groups (under 40, 40 and over) and by near vision symptoms.
  • Signal detection theory and Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC) curves were employed.
  • Dissociated and associated heterophoria values were analyzed.
