Parental Care00:55

Parental Care

13.0K
Many animals exhibit parental care behavior, including feeding, grooming, and protecting young offspring. Parental care is universal in mammals and birds, which often have young that are born relatively helpless. Several species of insects and fish, as well as some amphibians, also care for their young.

Pathophysiology of Diabetes01:20

Pathophysiology of Diabetes

4.5K
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia. The four categories of diabetes are type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, other specific types of diabetes, and gestational diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is characterized by autoimmune-mediated destruction of pancreatic β cells, with environmental factors potentially triggering this process in genetically susceptible individuals. Despite many not having a family history, certain genes increase susceptibility,...

Development of the Oral Microbiota01:28

Development of the Oral Microbiota

38
The establishment of the oral microbiome begins before birth, challenging the long-held belief that the fetal oral cavity is sterile. The presence of oral microbes such as Streptococcus and Fusobacterium in amniotic fluid suggests that microbial exposure may occur in utero, potentially through translocation from the maternal oral or gastrointestinal tract. This early colonization primes the neonatal immune system and sets the stage for subsequent microbial succession. Maternal health,...

Kidney Transplant III: Nursing Management

Postoperative Nursing Management for Kidney Transplant PatientsPostoperative nursing management care includes monitoring the surgical site, encouraging early movement, and promoting lung health through breathing exercises. Nurses also administer prescribed medications like H2-blockers, such as famotidine, or proton pump inhibitors, like omeprazole, to help prevent gastrointestinal ulcers and bleeding. Fungal infections in the mouth and bladder can result from immunosuppressive and antibiotic...

Parentral Nutrition: Centeral and Peripheral Parental Nutrition01:27

Parentral Nutrition: Centeral and Peripheral Parental Nutrition

1.6K
Parenteral Nutrition (PN) delivers essential nutrients directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system. It is commonly used for individuals with severe digestive disorders or conditions that prevent normal nutrient absorption.
PN can be administered through two primary routes:
1. Central Parenteral Nutrition (CPN):
CPN involves delivering a high concentration of nutrients through a large vein. This is typically achieved using a Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) or,...

Development of Human Microbiota01:30

Development of Human Microbiota

37
The human microbiota begins developing at birth and undergoes continual change as we age. Infancy marks a critical period of microbial sensitivity, offering a “window of opportunity” during which beneficial microbes help mature the immune system. By age three, children typically develop a more stable and diverse microbial community. Newborns acquire microbes from their immediate environment; vaginal delivery favors maternal vaginal microbes, while cesarean births favor microbes from...

Summary

Postnatal lactational counseling significantly improved infant weight gain and reduced mixed feeding. This intervention supports better infant nutrition and breastfeeding success in the neonatal period.

Area of Science:

  • Neonatal care
  • Lactation support
  • Pediatric nutrition

Background:

  • Breastfeeding is crucial for neonatal health.
  • Mixed feeding can negatively impact infant development.
  • Effective postnatal support is vital for successful breastfeeding.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of postnatal lactational counseling on neonatal weight gain.
  • To assess the effect of counseling on the frequency of mixed feeding in term neonates.

Main Methods:

  • An observational study comparing two groups of mother-infant pairs.
  • One group received standard encouragement; the other received structured breastfeeding counseling.
  • Weight gain at 28 days and frequency of mixed feeding were the primary outcome measures.

Main Results:

  • The counseled group showed significantly higher mean weight gain (9.2 g/kg/d) compared to the control group (7.9 g/kg/d).
  • Mixed feeding was less frequent in the counseled group (RR 0.36, P=0.046).

Conclusions:

  • Postnatal lactational counseling is effective in promoting higher infant weight gain.
  • Structured counseling reduces the likelihood of mixed feeding during the neonatal period.
