Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate sheep as a suitable animal model for investigating collecting system healing post-laparoscopic partial nephrectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy was performed on eight sheep kidneys.
  • Hemostasis was achieved using monopolar energy, leaving the collecting system open.
  • Post-operative analysis included serum and peritoneal fluid biomarkers, retrograde pyelography, methylene blue injection, and histology.

Main Results:

  • Urinoma formation occurred in one sheep.
  • Elevated urea and creatinine levels were detected in peritoneal fluid.
  • All kidneys showed contrast extravasation and confirmed open collecting systems, with operated poles showing collagenous tissue and adhesions.

Conclusions:

  • Sheep represent an adequate experimental model for studying collecting system healing after partial nephrectomy.
