Cancer Prevention

8.7K
Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer.

    Summary

Evaluating the French national breast cancer screening program reveals a need for modification. Recommendations include targeting higher-risk populations and improving mammography accuracy to enhance the risk/benefit ratio for breast cancer detection.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Public Health
    • Radiology

    Context:

    • The French national breast cancer screening program, established in 2004, offers mammography and clinical breast exams every two years to women aged 50-74.
    • Program participation reached 52.7% in 2012, with additional individual screenings bringing overall coverage near the European recommendation.

    Purpose:

    • To evaluate the risk/benefit ratio of the French national breast cancer screening program a decade after its nationwide implementation.
    • To discuss necessary modifications to improve program efficiency and address concerns of over-diagnosis and over-treatment.

    Summary:

    • Breast cancer mortality has declined in France, but attributing this solely to screening is difficult due to concurrent improvements in treatment.
    • Over-treatment, the detection and treatment of indolent tumors, remains a significant concern with an unknown frequency (1-30%).

  • Current screening protocols involve dual reading of mammograms and quality controls for participating radiologists.
  • Impact:

    • Suggests modifying the program to target higher-risk populations and reduce unmonitored external screenings to improve efficiency.
    • Recommends enhancing mammography sensitivity and reading specificity to mitigate risks.
    • Emphasizes the importance of informed consent, ensuring women understand both the benefits and risks of breast cancer screening.
